Guitar Workshop With Steve Lukather...

Important Update:

Steve Lukather, the Grammy Award-winning guitarist for Toto, will be the "rock artist in residence" at this years Crown of the Continent Guitar Workshop!

Perhaps you've heard that Steve was recently voted as the #1 guitarist in over 40 countries worldwide. He's definitely earned himself a place of honor among such notable players as Jeff Beck, Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page... to name a few.

Now, in case you forgot, or simply didn't know...

The Crown of the Continent Guitar Workshop will be held at Flathead Lake Lodge, in Big Fork, Montana from August 28 - September 4, 2011.

A bass guitar workshop will be added to the event this year too.

Space is limited for this guitar workshop so, if you are interested in participating, go to www.cocguitarfoundation.org or call 406-837-2574 for more information on how to register. The last report I received indicated that there were only 15 places left!

They will also be holding the 2nd Annual Yamaha 6 String Theory Guitar Competition at this year's workshop/festival. Over $100,000 in prizes will be awarded for the competition. Among them are...
  • A week long stay at Flathead Lake Lodge in Bigfork for a family of four,
  • A potential Concord Records recording contract
  • A National Guitar Workshop scholarship
Other prizes include: Yamaha Guitars, Monster Cable, D'Addario Strings, and others.

Contest rules and regulations are available at: www.sixstringtheory.com.

The Crown of the Continent Guitar Workshop is suitable for anyone who has a passion for the guitar- from the highly accomplished musician to the absolute beginner. It is also a unique opportunity to learn from, and play with, some of the best professional guitarists in the business.

Till next time...

Easter Song - Guitar Chords & Lyrics

Here is a video clip I recently found of Keith Green performing the "Easter Song" live from The Daisy Club in LA back in 1982.

Free Download:

It's interesting to me that Keith and I actually have several things in common...
  • We both lived in LA when we were young and even hung out in some of the same places
  • We were both brought up in the Christian Science religion (though Keith had a Jewish heritage)
  • We were both rebellious, anti-establishment teenagers
  • We both ran away from home at age 15
  • We both had a deep hunger for spiritual Truth and meaning
  • We both became interested in eastern mysticism
  • We both became musicians/songwriters (though he became famous)
  • We both met Jesus Christ about the same time (Keith-1974/Me-1975) and never looked back
Though I left LA in 1975 when Keith was just beginning his Last Days Ministries, I think we would have become good friends if we had met back then.

Keith Green had a kind heart and often brought drug addicts, prostitutes and people who were living on the street into his home... giving them food, shelter and a place to sleep... because that is what Jesus would do.

Keith's music and life story have always been an inspiration for me. I remember the first time I heard his album, No Compromise, how impressed I was by the intensity of his convictions. He really didn't care if people thought his music was too heavy, too radical, or too controversial.

People like Keith help me remember what Easter is all about... new beginnings, new life.

So, I hope you have fun learning how to play this song on your guitar.

Enjoy the celebration!

Till next time,...

Have a happy Easter and keep practicing!

Learning Guitar - 5 Essential Elements...

Everyone who has a desire to learn how to play guitar will find that it basically boils down to 5 essential elements...

1. Guitar Chords

Chords are one of the most essential elements of learning guitar.  That is why I believe that every guitarist can benefit from having a good Guitar Chord Encyclopedia (Ultimate Guitarist's Reference) or chord dictionary. A chord encyclopedia will help you learn how to play every type of chord imaginable.

These learning tools can be found online of course, but it's also a good idea to have a chord book or DVD that you can refer to when you are away from your computer. This will make it easier for you to reference chords when you are practicing, learning a new song, or simply jamming with your friends.

2. Guitar Scales

You have probably already heard that scales are the backbone of any guitar method, so you'll want to have some information at your disposal on how to use them.  It's easy to incorporate guitar scales as part of any practice routine and they are a great way to get your fingers warmed-up before playing.  In case you didn't know... all first position major guitar scales in each key are covered in my AbcLearnGuitar eBook.

3. Guitar Songs

Most people want to learn how to play songs, so it's nice to have at least a few of songbooks on your shelf. The best one I have is probably  The Beatles Complete Scores.  It gives the guitar tab, notation, chords and lyrics for each song.  The only complaint I have is that the print is rather small.  However, it is still a great reference tool because every Beatle song a person might want to learn is in one convenient location.

4. Guitar Styles

There are lots of different of guitar styles, or genres, that you might like to try also, such as... Rock, Blues, Jazz, Classical, Finger-style, Folk, Celtic, Hawaiian, Country, Heavy Metal... just to name a few. Don't try to learn them all at once. Pick a style you are interested in and try to learn as much as you can. If you discover that the style you chose is not your thing, try something else. When you find a style that you like, stick with it until you can actually play something well. It won't do you any good to be jumping around from one style to the next. It's important for you to develop the discipline of learning how to play a song, or piece of music, all the way through from beginning to end.

5. Guitar Techniques

As you are learning different songs and styles you will eventually be introduced to a wide variety of guitar techniques like... hammers, slides, pull-offs, bends, vibrato, tapping, tremolo... and the list goes on!  Scales provide an excellent way to practice many techniques, but it's usually more fun to learn how a technique is used in a song  or specific guitar style.

As a guitarist,  I am constantly reminded of how much there still is to learn! I only wish there was enough time to go through all of the guitar resources that I have, let alone all that are available! It can be overwhelming sometimes!

I often find it helpful to simplify things because then I am able to focus in on what is most necessary...  So, here again is a quick and simple list of the 5 essential elements (not necessarily in this particular order) to hone in on when learning how to play the guitar...

1. Guitar Chords
2. Guitar Scales
3. Guitar Songs
4. Guitar Styles
5. Guitar Techniques

Including these elements into your practice routine on a regular basis will help insure that you develop into a well rounded musician. It shouldn't take too long before you begin to see an overall improvement in your playing.
