CHUCK BERRY - Johnny B. Goode

Chuck Berry is almost synonomous with Rock and Roll music. His influence had a major impact on many artists including John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, and Keith Richards, to name a few. Lennon once said: "If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it 'Chuck Berry'."

Chuck was born on October 18, 1926 in St. Louis, Missouri. He learned to play in grade school and developed a style of playing which incorporated a Rhythm & Blues and Country Western sound rolled into one.

Berry's first number one hit Mabeline sold over 1 million copies and set him on the track for stardom. But, he is perhaps best remembered for the all time favorite hit Johnny B. Goode.

Here's an early clip...

Most serious guitarist who are interested in playing Rock and Roll eventually gravitate toward learning this song at some point along the way. It provides a great study on several techniques such as bends, slides, and hammer-ons.

Saturday, October 9, 2010 marks the 70th birthday anniversary of ex-Beatle, John Lennon.

His wife, Yoko Ono, has joined EMI in sponsoring a "Gimme Some Truth" campaign to commemorate the memory of her late husband who was murdered outside their home in New York city on December 8, 1980.

In a recent interview, Yoko revealed that she views herself as "Protector" of John's musical and artistic legacy...

"I was always a protector, I think, but especially after John's passing. Before that, I was putting all my energy into the partnership we had and protecting John. John was the one who needed protection. John was the famous one out there. I was in the shadows, so I didn't need to have much protection."

After John passed away Yoko decided to devote most of her energy to his fans by giving them something from him each year. She has overseen a series of projects for her famous husband since 1984, including the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus and the John Lennon Songwriting Contest.

Yoko remastered all 121 of John's songs at Abbey Road Studios in London. When asked what kind of experience that was for her, she replied...

"That was sort of a big job for me, and it was kind of trying in a way, both physically and emotionally. I didn't think I was going to feel anything personally because I have been doing John's work for the past 30 years, so I thought I can just do it how I should do it -- professionally.
But when I was doing that, I suddenly realized this was a new experience for me in a sense that I suddenly discovered, or started to discover, how good John was as a professional musician and as an artist, and that really got to me.
