LEARNING GUITAR - Equipment you'll need to get started...

So, you're thinking about learning how to play guitar and wondering what equipment you'll need to get started. Obivously, the most important piece of equipment you'll
need is the guitar itself. But what kind should you buy... acoustic or electric?

The type of guitar you'll choose depends primarily on your musical interests and long term goals. Generally speaking, if you want to play heavy metal, rock n' roll, or blues guitar and like artists such as... John Mayer, Eric Clapton, BB King, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Page, etc... then an electric guitar is probably the best choice.

On the other hand, if you prefer country, folk, fingerstyle or classical music and like artists such as... Willie Nelson, James Taylor, Don Ross, Christopher Parkening, Alex de Grassi, etc... then an acoustic guitar would be better.

Once you've decided on the type of guitar you will buy, the next important step is to get the right size. Pick a guitar that feels comfortable in your hand and doesn't require any awkward contortion of your body in order to strum directly over the center, or sound-hole, of the guitar.

Here is a list of some common guitar accessory equipment that you will also want to have...

- guitar case

- several picks  (thin, medium, and hard guage)

- guitar strap

- guitar tuner

- guitar stand

- extra strings

- cleaning cloth

- bottle of guitar polish

- chord reference book

- small amp (for electric and acoustic/electric guitars only)

- guitar chord (for electric and acoustic/electric guitars only)

But, before spending any money, you should consider what method you're going to use to learn how to play the guitar. For example, are you going to teach yourself, or find a guitar teacher?

If you plan on teaching yourself, then I recommend you find a good program or book that will help you build a solid foundation.
Everything will fall into place more naturally if you take it one step at a time, and I think you'll find that the learning process will be much easier for you too.

On the other hand, if you try learning guitar from random bits of information that you gather here, there and everywhere, you might just end up becoming frustrated and decide to quit altogether.

Taking guitar lessons from a qualified teacher will give you the advantage of having personal, one on one attention, which can help you progress at a much faster pace. The downside of this method is the cost. Private guitar lessons can be expensive, so you'll have to weigh the pros and cons before making your final decision. What can you afford? Which method provides the best way for you to learn most easily? Try to set some priorities in advance before purchasing.

In the final analysis, the most important piece of equipment you need to get started learning how to play is the right guitar.

Your second priority should be choosing the right method of instruction. Choose one that is most suitable for your particular situation and learning preferences.

Once you have these two basic elements in place, the other equipment you will need can be added as you go along and can afford it.

Michael Grimm - America's Next Superstar...

At 30 years old, Michael Grimm is quite possibly on his way to becoming America's next big superstar.

For several demanding months Michael has been successfully competing against other top performers for the coveted #1 spot on America's Got Talent TV show. He made it all the way to the final round and, to his own surprise, he won!

During the show Michael said that he was raised by his grandparents in Hancock County, Mississippi. They were already "very poor" but when Hurricane Katrina hit the area they also suffered the loss of their home. Michael wanted to help, so he played his music wherever he could and gave them the money he earned.

Watch this video to hear Michael's music and listen to his inspiring story...

This guy deserves the prize. He's definitely got real talent, real soul, and a heart of gold.

I have been trying to keep tabs on this contest for several months, so it was very exciting to learn that Michael won. Now he plans to use some of his $1 million dollar prize money to build a new home for his grandparents.

Michael also has a dream of his own. He wants to record an album. He said he has been working on it in his head and writing it down on paper, but never had the money to pull it off. Well, now his certainly does!

It seems that Michael has a smooth path to a full-time music career laid out in front of him right now.   But breaking into the music business is never easy, and I'm sure he would confirm this. In addition to talent, it also requires lots of hard work, seeking out opportunities to get your music heard, and making contacts with just the right people.

COC GUITAR FESTIVAL CONCERTS

Last weekend my husband and I attended the first annual CROWN OF THE CONTINENT GUITAR FESTIVAL in Big Fork, Monatana.

WOW!

That basically sums up our experience in one word. It was absolutely fantastic! Several of the worlds best guitar players...

Alex de Grassi
Pat Metheny
Lee Ritenour
Scott Tennant
Doug Smith
Jody Fisher

...came together at Flathead Lake Lodge, one of the most beautiful settings in western Montana, for a week long guitar workshop.

Preparing the stage for Saturday night's concert

Students were given the opportunity to study various genres such as jazz, blues, classical, rock and fingerstyle guitar with leading national and internationl guitarists.

The workshop included "...personalized group lessons, master classes, jamming with the house band and one-on-one interaction for both serious and casual students..."

I learned about the CROWN OF THE CONTINENT GUITAR FESTIVAL after the registration period ended, so I wasn't able to participate in the workshop this year. However,  James and I did enjoy the concerts that were held on Friday and Saturday night...

Local fingerstyle guitarist, John Floridis, opens the show

Me, Alex de Grassi, James - "old friends"

Last year I was able to take part in Alex de Grassi's guitar workshop in Los Gatos, California.

He is one of my favorite fingerstyle guitar players, so that was a very special treat.

I was glad when Alex and his wife remembered us with warm hugs and smiles.

They treated us like we were old friends.

CROWN OF THE CONTINENT GUITAR FESTIVAL already has dates set for next year's event. You can learn more about it on their website at:  http://www.cocguitarfoundation.org

A HORSE WITH NO NAME

A Horse With No Name, written and recorded by the group known as "America", quickly reached #1 in the USA after it's release in 1972.

Apparently, some critics thought the lyrics to A Horse With No Name were referring to illegal drug use and as a result, it was banned from several radio stations in the US.

This video includes the lyrics, so I'll let you be the judge of that....

Many people originally thought A Horse With No Name was another great Neil Young song (some still do). I guess that's because, prior to this, Neil had been enjoying the spotlight with his own #1 hit Heart of Gold.
