GUITARIST CHRISTOPHER PARKENING

Christopher Parkening is considered to be "...one of the most brilliant guitarists in the world," according to his former instructor, the late, and legendary Andres Segovia.

Christopher Parkening's first guitar teachers were none other than Celedonio and Pepe Romero! When Parkening was still a young boy, the Romeros moved from Spain to L.A. where Parkening lived. After studying with them for awhile he was given the opportunity to perform at a competition in UCLA's "Royce Hall."

When the show was over, the composer of the music that Christopher had played, sent a tape of Parkening's performance to Andres Segovia, requesting a scholarship for him to attend Segovia's first U.S. Master Class. This event was held in 1964 at the University of California at Berkley and the rest, as they say, is history.

Christopher Parkening - Virtuoso Performances

However, fame has it's downside and the demanding performance schedule that Christopher had to keep up with began taking it's toll. Parkening finally reached a point in his career where he was burnt out.

He made a decision to quit performing and bought a ranch in Montana. All he wanted to do for the rest of his life, he said, was fly fishing. So, that's all he did. For three years, Christopher Parkening, the world famous classical guitar virtuoso, hardly ever picked up his guitar.

It was during this period of solitude and soul searching, however, that Christopher Parkening accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. This major turning point in his life gave him a new sense of purpose and direction. As a result, he began performing with his classical guitar again because, as he puts it:

"I am a Christian, and I read the Bible a lot. I desire to bring glory to the Lord in some small way with the music that I play, and that is first and foremost in my mind."

Today, Christopher Parkening is renowned all over the world for his solo classical guitar performances. He has played concertos with leading orchestras, performed at the White House and been nominated for two Grammy Awards.

On July 27, 1999 he gave a concert celebrating the 25th Anniversary of The Christopher Parkening Master Class which is held at Montana State University. I had the privilege of attending both the Master Class and the concert. I even have an autograph from Christopher Parkening to prove it!

GUITAR VIDEO DOWNLOAD

Last week I told you where you could find some free resources to help you learn how to play guitar. Well, there is another resource I didn't mention that you might also be interested in checking out...

I'm sure you know that there are many, many sites on the web offering videos for guitar players. These videos can help you learn songs, chords, scales, licks, etc.

But did you know that there is a video downloader application called Video Snooper that will help you find these videos and download them on your computer?

Best of all, it's entirely FREE!

That's right it costs you nothing. There are absolutely no strings attached... no restrictions or limitations on its use.

The product is a universal video downloader that will download videos from an estimated 90% of all sites on the World Wide Web.

You will also be able to download videos from places like... Youtube, Google Video, Yahoo Video, Vemeo, Myspace, Facebook and several other major sites.

That means, the next time you are viewing a video online that you like, you can use Video Snooper to grab it and save it to your machine. Then you can watch the video offline as many times as you like. This will provide another great way for you to learn more about playing the guitar. It's really that simple.

Video Snooper is not only limited to guitar videos though. It will download any video from the Internet that has the embed code enabled. So, if you want to download and save a video on your computer about some other important information you are interested in viewing, this application will help you to do that.

Unfortunately, Video Snooper is currently only available for Windows users. But if that describes you, just click the link below for details on how to download and install your free copy...

ELEMENTS OF GUITAR PLAYING

What are the essential elements of guitar playing? I was asked this question by a student just last week. Here is what he said...

I've been playing guitar for over five years now. Most of the stuff I play I just know from being taught by proper guitar players or by reading tab. I only know how to play guitar through remembering the order in which notes or chords come.

If I was to jam with someone I wouldn't know where to start because I've never known anything about the technical side of guitar playing i.e. I don't know anything about a key that a song is played in, I can't tune a guitar by ear and I find it difficult to understand the theory behind guitar playing.

I would consider myself to be a mediocre player and can quickly pick up any tunes but the only way I can learn them is through reading tabs or being taught them.

Can you suggest any lessons or elements of guitar playing that I should work on in order to give myself a better ear for the music and to understand the technical element of guitar playing?
Perhaps some of you can relate to this student and are wondering the same thing. If so, you may benefit from what I told him. Here is what I said...

First of all, I would suggest that you go through the free lessons on my website, or download my free ebook. I cover some theory explaining what a "key" is, how chords are made, how scales are made, etc. This will get you started on the essential elements of guitar playing.

It sound like you have a good ear and learn fast. So, I suggest that you focus on learning your guitar fretboardand getting a better understanding of scales and chords. This should help pull some loose ends together for you.

If you are interested in playing lead guitar and learning how to improvise over chords, then I suggest the Guitar Scale Mastery Course. It's taught by Craig Bassett who is a professional guitarist, guitar tutor, and author. He's got a pretty impressive video on his website if you want to see him playing guitar.

These resources are designed to give you the essential elements of guitar playing too. So do yourself a favor and be sure to take advantage of them! :0)
