There are several good reasons why the Washburn D10S is currently rated the best selling acoustic guitar in the world for under $500. Of course, one of the first things people notice is the low price. But this in itself would usually cause a person to think the guitar was made of cheap laminated wood and have a lousy sound. The fact is however, that the D10S dreadnought features a solid spruce top with mahogany back and sides, so it produces a rich, full-bodied tone. In addition to this, the mahogany neck with rosewood fretboard is adjustable, so you can set it up the way you like.
The Washburn Company got it's name from George "Washburn" Lyon who was not a luthier, but a
businessman. George had a friend by the name of P.J. Healy, and sometime around 1863-1864 they began a large sheet music distribution business in Chicago called the Lyon & Healy Company. It just so happened that Lyon's partner was a luthier and in a short time they began selling several brands of instruments too. Soon the Washburn label was born and the company became the main supplier of stringed instruments for many mail order catalogs, including Montgomery Ward and Sears & Roebuck. In it's peak the L & H company were producing up to 100 guitars a day.

This quickly became the hub for a stream of musicians who came to the bustling city of Chicago from the poorer Mississippi Delta area. Jam sessions would erupt spontaneously as people gathered anywhere they could to share their musical stories of suffering and hardship. The Washburn acoustic guitar was an important component of this creative environment and it was during this time that a new musical genre known as the Mississippi, or Delta Blues, was established.
